Silver - Collecting Spoons

Spoons are a great item to collect. They vary in size from quite tiny to quite large but generally they do not take up too much space.

Stem Caster

You can find spoons from the 16th century right through to now. Some can be very expensive and others quite low cost. Some special things to look out for are the older and rarer items and you may be lucky or diligent enough to have one or two in your collection.

Stem Caster

Apostle spoons, these have ends on the stem that depict the 12 apostles and a full set will also have the Master spoon making 13 in all. The Master spoon is larger and depicts Jesus. You will be very unlikely to get a set of these but may find an isolated spoon, again not very likely but worth looking for. These spoons originate in the 15th century and then stop being produced around 1660-70. These spoons were popular as baptismal gifts for the wealthy in the 16th century. The Maidenhead and Lion Sejant spoon is also from around this period and has the figure of a female, or Lion instead of an apostle.

Early spoons often have hexagonal handles and a finial. The sliphead spoon is another early spoon that has no finial and the handle is cut away on an angle.

The most prolific cast terminal/finial is the sealtop and hence the sealtop spoon. This ends in a circular disc at the top of the handle and often had the initials of the owner and could therefor be used as a seal. Earlier spoons had a small seal and this tended to get larger in later productions.

Following this period the spoon stem transitioned from being narrow to the widening Puritan type handle of the 18th century and resembles the spoon handle of today. These changes occurred very gradually and the bowl also became deeper and more functional.

Rat-Tail spoon. This relates to how the handle was attached to the bowl and describes a long narrowing join from the handle onto the back of the bowl. As the stem widened the Trefid became popular on the end of the handle, this describing an end having three lobes. Early examples have th date letter struck high on the handle. The rat-tail disappeared around 1725 but some later examples were produced.

Spoons with die struck motifs also tend to be early spoons and the handle type gives a better indication of the period in which it was produced, narrow hexagonal stems being earlier than puritan stems.

Teaspoons have been produced from around 1670 and early ones are seldom fully marked, only having the makers mark and the lion passant. You may be very fortunate and find one with a twisted handle but these are quite rare. Picture back teaspoons became popular in the 18th century, the picture being stamped on the outer of the bowl.

The Mote-spoon, this is a puzzling spoon, also known as the stirrer-spoon, mullberry-spoon and olive-spoon. It has a long tapering stem ending in a barbed spike and often has a rat-tail attachment to the bowl. The bowl is usually pierced and the spoon is not likely to be fully marked. There should be a makers mark and lions head erased on early ones, lion passant on later ones. It is assumed that this spoon is a fore-runner of the tea strainer. The tea strainer came into service around the 1790's.

Suckett- spoon, appears in the 1660's and has the rat-tail to bowl attachment and a fork on the opposite end of the stem. They are usually quite small, 5 to 5.5 inches and made from very thin gauge silver.

Basting-spoon, these date from the 1670's often having long trefid handles and deep pierced bowls that later gave way to an unpierced bowl.

Marrow-spoon. This is an adaptation of the trefid / rat-tail spoon with a hollowed out stem. It was created and used to extract the bone marrow from cooked bones, this being regarded as a delicacy.

Medicine spoons are usually from the 18th and 19th century. Often double ended with a different dose measure on each end. There is also the caster-oil spoon that formed a closed recepticle with a hollow handle. This allowed the giver of the dose to restrict the flow of caster-oil until the recipient has the bowl in the mouth.

Spoons continued to be developed through to the present day and come in a huge variety of shapes and sizes.

What You Need to Know About Finding the Perfect Office Chair Casters

You've probably heard it a hundred times - the world is fast paced and everything changes. Fashion, technology, and interior design are some common examples. And yes, even office chair casters. With the changes in what defines sleek and classy, it is imperative that consumers know what office chair casters to use and where to use them. Improper selection of what type of casters to use is not only problematic in positioning chairs with desks, but also increases unnecessary movements that can cause discomfort to an individual.

    Stem Caster

There are different types of office chair casters out in the market today depending on various situations or uses. To help you become abreast with the recent changes, here's a rundown of the most common office chair casters.

    Stem Caster

You have the option between two types of office chair casters depending on the material- soft and hard casters. From here, manufacturers tweak features to make them applicable to various settings. Hard office chair casters are perhaps the most popular ones today. Wheels are made of hard rubber that may or may not be covered with a metal hood. You normally see this included in most office chairs that are made for carpeted offices. Soft office chair casters, on the other hand, are made of soft rubber or polypropylene. This type of caster can easily be dented with your fingernails.

Aside from the application, you can also select casters based on your work environment. Contrary to common belief, casters are not merely wheels for easy maneuvering. Casters can also appear as gliders for jobs that require stationary work. While wheels are helpful in jobs such as those in receptions or medical facilities, this is a hassle for jobs that require workers to use a foot pedal - such as sewing jobs. In this case, a glider is much more efficient to use.

In addition, different types of office chair casters are applicable for different types of application or setting. First, do not use hard casters if your floor is tiled. Doing so will remove the tile finish and abrade the floor or caster surface. If your office is carpeted, then hard casters are perfect for you are they are easier to maneuver with this type of floor. Second, when your floor is either tiled, covered with vinyl or has chair mats, make sure you use a soft caster. It doesn't stain your floor, and at the same time, it provides better traction in hard surfaces, thus eliminating unnecessary rolling.

Like most products, different office chair casters feature their own unique characteristics. There are some that are easy to replace with a push-and-pull mechanism. When casters are old, they are usually harder to move and even create noise when rolled. Thus, it's important that the manufacturer you select for your purchase has available replacements in stock. Modern casters also come with different stems to make them appropriate for use in various types such as metal, wood, and tubular metal chairs. For companies that want everything to complement their interior decors, this is your lucky day. Casters don't come in the usual grey or black colors anymore. You're free to choose from a wide variety of available colors to suit your needs. Most casters also come with auto-lock features to keep you stationary when you need it the most.

How to Select the Proper Casters and Wheels for Your Application

    Stem Caster

Many factors must be taken into consideration in order to select the proper industrial caster or wheel. To make the most appropriate selection for your application, consider the following:
Load Weight - The heavier the load, the larger the wheel required for the caster. The weight of the load also influences wheel mobility. For heavy duty loads over 400 lbs., roller or ball bearings are recommended.
Floor Conditions - Be sure the wheel selected is large enough to pass over cracks in the floor, tracks, molding, and other obstructions. Use polyurethane or Performa rubber wheels for floor protection on linoleum, tile, carpet, etc.
Unusual Conditions - Each wheel material has characteristics which will provide the best results where unusual conditions exist. For example Polyurethane, polyolefin, phenolic, or steel wheels are recommended where acids, oils, chemicals, and other substances harmful to rubber are present.
Rolling Ease - The larger the wheel, the easier it rolls. While roller bearing wheels can carry heavier loads, ball bearing wheels roll more easily but carry lighter loads. Whenever possible, use the largest ball bearing wheel necessary for best results.
Extreme Climates - Room temperatures are not a problem for most casters. However extreme cold and heat can be a problem. Bastian casters come standard with lubrication designed to withstand temperatures from 450°F below zero to 2600°F above zero.
Shock Load - The impact caused by dropping a load on a cart or truck, or by rolling on a rough surface. When encountering shock loading, you will need to look at four things: construction of the caster, type of kingpin, swivel bearing, and the composition of the wheel.

    Stem Caster

    Caster Types
Rigid - A rigid caster has a rigid yoke and wheel assembly which permits only straight-line movement. Swivel - A swivel caster has a swivel yoke and wheel assembly that will allow rotation of 360 degrees, which permits movement in any direction. Locking - A locking caster is an assembly that can be locked in place by some sort of mechanic device.

    Caster Parts Definitions & Nomenclature
Wheel Diameter - Wheel diameter is the outer nominal diameter of the wheel. Bolt Hole Spacing - Bolt hole spacing is the distance measured from the center of the bolt hole to the opposite center of the other bolt hole. caster Size - A loose term for classifying casters, based on the nominal diameter of the wheel. For example, a "6 inch caster" is any caster having a 6 inch diameter wheel. Hub Length Hub length is the widest part of the hub (including bearing assembly and thread guards). Overall Height - Overall height is the vertical distance between floor and mounting plate. (NOTE: casters with threaded stems are measured to the top washer and do not include the length of the threaded stem). Bore Diameter - Bore diameter is the distance measured through the center of the wheel. Tread Width/Face - The outer surface of the wheel, in contact with the ground. The width of the wheel tread cross-section, measured at the base of the tread rather than at the point of floor contact. Plate Dimension - Plate dimension is the measured distance from one edge of the top plate to the opposite side and the distance from the other edge of the top plate to the opposite side. Capacity - The maximum recommended lad per caster or wheel based on intermittent operation over smooth floors at speeds not exceeding 3 mph, with no shock loading or adverse environmental conditions. Gross weight of a truck or dolly should be divided by the number of casters or wheels on which the weight is distributed. Swivel Radius - A swivel radius is the horizontal distance from vertical centerline of kingpin to outside edge of wheel tread. Specifies minimum clearance required for mounted caster to swivel 360 degrees. Offset/Swivel Lead - The perpendicular distance between the vertical centerlines of the kingpin and the axle of a swivel caster. Larger offsets afford easier swiveling, shorter offsets greater strength. Swivel Lead -Swivel lead is the horizontal distance between vertical centerlines through kingpin and wheel center.

    Caster Measurement Definitions & Nomenclature

Durometer - A measure of the hardness of resilient tread wheels. Component Thrust - Designates side forces exerted on a swivel caster and properly counteracted by the secondary load bearing. Roll ability - Ease of starting and rolling, measured by drawbar pull. This is determined by load, floor conditions, and type and size of wheels and bearings. Direct Thrust - Designates those downward forces exerted on a caster by the load, and counteracted by the main load bearing.
